Small change: look around

There is no such thing as ‘all of a sudden’ in business. Every problem, every opportunity, every crisis — they all start somewhere. The question is whether or not you were paying attention at the time.

No leader intends to be short-sighted, but it’s too easy for any of us to end up there. The daily psychodramas of work — the politics, the firefighting, the relentless demands on our time — conspire to make it so.

The challenge is to not let the issues of the present be all that you see. Instead, engage your peripheral vision. You can guarantee that the next problem or opportunity is already perceptible on the horizon — just waiting for your time and talent.
