Small change: one problem, one discussion
First published onMar 12, 2024
Talk to anyone at work, and they are likely to tell you that their number one source of frustration is meetings. Long, directionless meetings that represent a considerable investment of time for a meagre return.
One major reason for this is the inability of many teams to maintain focus. Listen closely. You will often hear the nature of problems being debated at the same time as potential solutions. Strategy being discussed at the same time as tactics. Pet peeves edging their way into unrelated issues. Whataboutery.
The solution is both ruthless and kind: establish a single-minded purpose for the meeting, and force the train to remain on those tracks. ‘One problem, one discussion’ saves both time and sanity. What’s not to love?
Something to consider: what’s the one thing we need to discuss right here, right now?
