Small change: pay attention

Despite appearances, many business conversations are not conversations at all. Instead, those involved are in campaign mode: waiting their turn to interject with what they perceive to be the correct view of the world.

Not only is campaign mode a boring way to communicate, it represents a vast missed opportunity to understand how other people see things. Properly embraced, this diversity of perspectives can pave the way for breakthroughs that were unimaginable beforehand.

Real conversations can be fun, too. This is because there is no such thing as a boring person. If you pay attention, you will learn that every human being on this planet is capable of coming out with some stuff that is… well, pretty wild.

Something to consider: what would happen if I got out of campaign mode, and made it my job to listen?
