Small change: advice is cheap, insight is priceless

We’ve all heard that truism about opinions being like… well, you know what. Everyone’s got one, is the point.
The same is true of advice. In any change process, you will find no shortage of people offering input. Not all of it will be good. Unfortunately, bad quality advice is not always easy to spot. Indeed, entire industries have been built on the artful use of style to disguise often questionable substance (well hello there, management consultancy).
Insight, though, is different. It starts from within: from an acknowledgement that everything is not as it seemed. Insight illuminates circumstances, perceptions and issues that we have always in some way sensed to be true, but have been obscured from view.
The best thing about insight? When you’ve had it, you can try to ignore it — but, unlike advice, you can’t walk away from it.
