Small change: don’t stop believing

Start With Why, implores apparent Messiah of contemporary business thought Simon Sinek. Get clear on your purpose, and it will rally and motivate your people beyond your wildest dreams. And this is all well and good, but to be successful, any work around purpose relies on the abundance of another ‘p’: possibility.
Too often, change falls apart because in some fundamental way people don’t believe it’s possible. This was expressed to us several years ago by a client who stated “we’re doing change this year… before things get back to normal.” Which is just a way of saying: “nothing’s really going to change at all”.
To be motivated to change, we need to believe that we can achieve it. So, possibility is the underlying energy of change. Too often, exhaustion, poor historic experience, or a hidden desire to maintain the status quo work against this. If you’re seeking positive transformation, don’t start with why, start with when, and explore whether your people believe that desired future state is possible.
