Small change: examine your real values

If you want to understand an organisation’s true values, there are way better places to look than the ‘brand book’.

Here are three examples. Firstly, the P&L. If a business cares about something it will have invested or spent money trying to achieve it. Secondly, the supplier experience. How a business acts when it has the upper hand, power-wise, says a great deal about its corporate compass. Thirdly, exit interviews. Excepting instances of gross misconduct, businesses tend to part company with people for values violations.

The bracing news is that your organisation’s true values might not be that flattering. The good news is that, armed with the truth, you can engage in a constructive discussion about how well they serve you.
