Small change: first, create capacity

First, find the time. Everyone knows that effective, sustainable transformation doesn’t happen overnight.

Learning new things takes time. Testing takes time. Normalisation takes time. The conversation that is required to enable all this takes time. Especially when it involves lots of people. These facts are blindingly obvious — yet many organisations seem blind to them.

This blindness shows up in a failure to create the capacity for the necessary work of change to actually get done. Too often, people rightly expect change to take time, but don’t create the space and time necessary for people to do the actual work of change. The net result? The initiative falters or fails entirely.

The message, then, is simple: if you want change to take root, don’t load it on to an already packed to-do list.

Something to consider: are we creating sufficient capacity for the change challenge we’ve set ourselves?
