“When did you first become aware that this was a problem?”

In almost any situation where something hasn’t been going to plan, this can be a helpful — if painful — question to ask. The answer (and we have been here many times ourselves) will often be something like “around six months ago”.

This simple question illustrates a human truth. Our awareness is always functioning perfectly — a calm, unobtrusive voice that’s telling us what we need to know.

The reality is that we almost always have a sense of what’s going on, or the right or wrong course of action. But so often we choose to rationalise, intellectualise or deny the inconvenient truth. Until, that is, the consequences of doing so become too big to ignore.

Something to consider: what is my awareness trying to tell me right now?
