Small change: make work a conduit for love

Here’s a perspective. We are spinning around on a tiny rock in a minuscule part of a cold, impersonal universe that is infinitely vaster than any of us can even begin to comprehend. And each of us only has a short time on this rock before we revert to being the dust from which we came.

As we spin around this rock, in order to love our time on it, we need to do things that matter to us. As a species, we are hardwired for utility: to be of service to ourselves, those around us, and the planet.

The problem is we don’t often pay attention to whether or not we are fulfilling this need. Especially at work. Our lack of conscious awareness means we rarely ask ourselves the tough questions like “am I making things better round here or am I contributing to the challenges we face?” Or “is the change I am seeking to make going to make things better for those I share the planet with, or not?”

Work can and should be a conduit for love. The fact that it is often a conduit for love’s direct opposite — fear — does not change this fact.

Something to consider: what is the real purpose of the change that you are seeking to make?
