Small change: you’ve done this before

Overwhelm has a way of convincing leaders they’ve never faced anything quite like this.
The pressure mounts, the complexity increases, and suddenly this particular difficulty feels different from everything that’s come before. Harder, more intractable. The kind of thing that might actually break you this time.
Except it rarely is. When you examine the record, most leaders have already navigated situations every bit as demanding as the one they’re currently facing. They’ve survived board pressure, market shocks, team crises and strategic dead ends. Yet in the moment, that history becomes oddly invisible.
Pain distorts perspective. It makes the present feel permanent and the future feel closed. But your track record tells a different story: that difficulty passes, that you’ve found ways through before, and that the resilience you’re looking for already exists in what you’ve already done.
Something to consider: what previous problem did I think would break me that I can barely remember now?
